27th - 31st March
We arrived at Rainbow Beach at around 12pm and had a walk around before going to the meeting about our Fraser Island trip. We had to watch a long rubbish video about how to drive on sand and what to do if you see a Dingo. It was very boring! We then got put into our group. We were Group 2 - This was me Em and Amy, joined by the Irish boys Chris and Gerrard, German twins Mirion and Roman and fellow Welshy Gail. It became obvious from the start that we had the best group!
The next day we left around 8am in our 4x4 and had a long drive to camp on Fraser Island. We set up the communal area, all of our tents and made some lunch before going to our first stop, Lake McKenzie. We spent a few hours sunbathing and chilling by the lake before Wayne (our amazing lead driver/tour guide) told us we had to head back to camp. For the first night our group were in charge of cooking and made an Asian stir fry for everyone, around 27 people. It was quite stressful but turned out amazing and everyone loved it. Also, this was the only thing we had to do on the trip so we were now free of any chores for the night and tomorrow! We got started on the goon and all sat around the camp. We all headed to bed after a few hours and were abit wary of the dingoes, especially as there has been a few attacks in the last two weeks! We lasted until 3am before we needed to go to the toilet so we took it in turn to pee outside while the other two stood on tip toes with our arms in the air (apparently you need to make yourself as tall as possible so it is less likely they will attack you). We survived this only to be woken up an hour later by Dingoes howling outside our tents and we were all so scared! Luckily one of the boys shouted at them to go away (he used much worse words but i could not put them in here). They seemed to get the message though and then left us alone.
At 6.30am we all received a lovely wake up call from Wayne and had to get ready for a long day of driving and sightseeing! Our first stop was Eli Creek, not really anything special apart from a tiny river that people were walking in. We didnt really see the point though. We then went to Champagne Pools which were better and it was boiling so we got an hour of sunbathing in! The other main place we went to was Indian Head where apparently you can see all the sharks etc in the sea. At Fraser Island you are not allowed in the sea as it is full of them. We didnt get to see any though and were abit disapointed after walking to the top of the point. I asked Wayne if we could throw him in the sea so that we could see them, unfortunately he declined.
That was the last stop of the day before heading back to camp. It was such a good day and our group were getting on so well. I love the Irish boys as they are such goons, especially Gerrard who after getting water walked back to the 4x4, only he walked to the wrong one and looked up with such a confused face. We were all wetting ourselves watching him do it, i think he was abit embarassed! Roman also had a goon moment and fell out of the car (when it wasnt even moving), he looked up quickly hoping we had not noticed. Unfortunately for him we all had and we were all pointing and laughing!
In the evening we all drank way too much goon playing drinking games. My last memory is playing Electricity (an amazing drinking game shown by Dean and Kayla). The next thing i knew i woke up and i was in the back of our car. I was so confused and had the worst hangover but felt better that Amy couldnt remember much either!
We all had to pack up our tents and our 4x4's then went to the final place before stopping for lunch. After lunch we had to head back to Mainland and back to Rainbow Beach. We were all pretty excited to get back to the hostel and finally shower, and i think the boys couldnt wait to get out of the car as we made them listen to Beyonce for about 95% of the time. When we got back we found we had all been put in the same dorm - yay!
The girls made dinner for the 7 of us and then we spent the evening in our room watching Inbetweeners. Roman moaned all night that he was too cold, that the 'ventilator' (not a ventilator but a cheap rubbish fan) had given him a cold and also poked Gerrard to wake him up and tell him to stop snoring. This was all pretty amusing.
We all woke up to the sun shining in the window and spent our last day here on the beach. Gerrard, Chris, Mirian and Roman left to move on to their next spots so we had to say bye which was sad, especially as we had been constantly with them for the past few days! I will miss our Fraser Island family!
We then just chilled and packed all of our stuff as we were leaving the next morning. Emily is leaving to go home on the 10th so she is going straight to Brisbane with Donna but me and Amy are stopping at Mooloolaba so we can go to Australia Zoo - woohoo! Apparently it is amazing so we are both very excited!
